The Game of Money
When it comes to making decisions about how to spend our money each of us has filters. Some of those filters serve us really well and some of them are actually blind spots which keep us spinning.
One thing that I have found to be very helpful is when we can shift our perspective to look at every expenditure as an investment.
When we are investing in something we have an expectation of a return. In business this return on investment typically comes in the form of sales or increased profitability. In our personal lives it typically comes in the form of lifestyle.
What I mean by lifestyle is that it includes everything from how we spend our time to the kinds of groceries we buy. It covers how much we have in savings and the kind of car we drive.
The more consciously we can make our investments the more likely we are to truly create the lifestyle and business we desire.
So how are you making your decisions?
Make a game out of it. You see managing money to me is a game and each of us gets to set the rules we want to use to win the game. Yes there are some fundamentals about money that apply to all of us and then we get to decide the rest.
For example are you paying yourself before you pay your team and vendors? Do you have reserves every month? Do you have a team or do you do it all yourself?
Each time you take your wallet to make an investment this week ask yourself what “rules” you are using when making the investment. Then ask a second question – how is that working out for you?
Finally ask how will I make decisions going forward?
