Get Right With Your Money!

One of the things I know is that money is one of our greatest teachers.  It doesn’t matter where you are on the growth curve, there is always more to learn.  That is the joy of being alive and well isn’t it – always having the next step in front of you.

All of us want to have integrity with this thing called money.  The dictionary definition of Integrity is “the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles” as well as “the state of being whole and undivided”.  Often times when we are hitting the wall with money, whether that is not having consistent income or the kind of income we desire or creating more and more debt and constantly being in a state of chaos with money, what is truly going on for us is a state of being divided.

In other words what we desire in our heart and what is playing out in our business and life are not in alignment.  There is a disconnect somewhere.

So how do we bridge the divide?

The steps are actually very simple, they just aren’t always easy.  Each of us has blind spots when it comes to money and it takes an outside set of eyes and ears to help us through them.    Just this week I was speaking with a very seasoned and successful business man who unknowingly helped me to uncover one of my blind spots.

So the steps we walk every one of our clients through are:

1.  Baseline – where you are today.  Numbers are black and white (we are the ones that attach all the emotion to them) and they tell us a story.  The meaning of the story is up to us AND the gift in getting clear on your baseline is that now you can make decisions with information and not just emotion.

2.  Create a Plan – where do you want to go and by when. AND I mean really! Not a “someday” plan with a hope and a prayer, but a crystal clear plan where the “numbers are real.”  What I mean by that is when we can truly be clear on first, what it is that we want and, second, what the real numbers are with that, then we can again make decisions from a place of empowerment and not just emotion.

3.  Close the Gap – this is where the juice is, this is where our day to day life happens.  We forecast forward what it is that we are willing to do to close the gap from where we are today (baseline) to where we want to go (plan).  The way we do that is with a Dynamic Planning System.  Why dynamic?  Because life happens and we want to make sure that no matter what happens we can keep the bus on the right road to get where we want to go.

Closing the gap is not for the faint of heart.  It takes being willing to look at yourself, at your relationship with money and being willing to learn new skills and do new things.  Ultimately it is what we are all after as we do the work we are called to do every day and serve the people who are on our heart to serve.
